In total, in the period from February to May 2024, 10 Basic Emergency Care trainings (hereinafter referred to as BEC) were held in medical institutions of higher education in the Ternopil, Lviv, Odesa, Vinnytsia, Poltava regions and the city of Kyiv.

This is an international course designed for medical workers who have undergone clinical training and provide emergency care at the hospital and pre-hospital stages. The purpose of the course is to teach physicians a systematic approach to the initial assessment and treatment of critically ill patients.

Medical workers who take the course learn:

  • assess the patient's condition using the ABCDE system approach,
  • identify and apply key treatments and procedures in life-threatening conditions,
  • determine the patient's further route.

In addition, the training involves the creation of a group of local BEC trainers in Ukraine. For this, with the support of the World Health Organization, several international accredited trainers work in our country, who will help Ukrainian candidates to complete all the steps necessary to achieve the status of an accredited BEC master trainer.

To become a Master Trainer, a potential candidate must first successfully complete the BEC course as a participant. Then - to conduct three BEC courses, one of which is under the supervision of an internationally accredited facilitator. The candidate can be certified after completing all the steps and then teach others within the course.

The Basic Emergency Care course was created by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Emergency Medicine. The Ministry of Health, together with the WHO, is working on the systematic introduction of this course in Ukraine.
